50 Cent
Just as the gangster era was ending 50 Cent burst onto the scene with the help of Eminem, and Dr Dre. 50 Cent brought a gangster rawness to the hip hop scene, and with a background in drugs and street hustling, he started producing the rap goods.
Your Opinion of 50 cent
50 cent
A Tribe Called Quest
A Tribe Called Quest, although sometimes overlooked hip hop group, produced some original hip hop tracks in the mid 90's. Maybe original is the wrong word though, as it was a more laid back hip hop style that they brought to the rap scene, while it was starting to be saturated with gangster tracks. To help with the production, and the rapping was the very well respected q-tip, who has since when on to produce tracks for lots of popular musicians in the industry today. Quest were noted as being some of the most intelligent hip hop lyric writers, with almost all their songs carrying pro-black, and positive messages. You can hear their tracks being sampled by many of the hardcore rappers that are still in the game today.

Afrika Bambaataa
Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu nation where a pioneering hip hop movement at the very early stages of hip hop culture in the late 70's early 80's. His group was more a movement for positive change and included b boy dancers and graffiti artists. When Afrika Bambaataa was rocking it, there was always a party.
Your Opinion of Afrika Bambaataa
David Banner
David Banner is a successful solo artist who rose to prominence in the rap scene with the interest in the dirty south vibe, in the late 90's, early 2000's. Banner has a dirty grimy voice, although he has a number of hardcore sounding tracks, and plenty of filthy language, he does switch his style up with some really well written tracks including Cadillac 22's, the story of a girl killed in a car accident, and the struggle out of the depths of slavery by people in the south. You can hear him teamed up with most of the other popular south artists, and he also has a number of chopped and screwed albums, of which Banner made popular.
Your Opinion of David Banner
Bahamadia
Bahamadia first started making impact on the hip hop scene back in 94-95 when she collaborated with Guru and Gangstarr, and rapped on the Jazzmatazz track respect the architect. She is a well respected and established female artist with a big underground following.
Your Opinion of Bahamadia
Beastie Boys
Back in the ol days of Def Jam records, the beastie boys where the first very popular white hip hop group that gained respect for ol' school style lyrics, and hardcore beats.

Big Daddy Kane
Big Daddy Kane is an old school rapper and some would say one of the best all time lyrical experts. His smooth talking kept the ladies begging for more, and his hardcore ruffness and delivery kept the gangsters real. Big Daddy Kane was one of the first rap artists to effectively cross over to large hits, by using some well known soul artists beats and samples, and yet still remained very well respected. He considered himself a good rolemodel, and never rapped about guns and violence. He released a wide range of albums with the help of his DJ Mister Cee.
Your Opinion of Big Daddy Kane
Biz Markie
One of the strangest rap artists to ever hit the hip hop scene. Biz markie was an original beat boxer, and turned to rapping with great ol school acclaim. He enjoyed rapping on such topics and picking boogers (picking your nose)

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are one of the most original hip hop sounding groups to hit the rap scene. You could almost describe them as gangster choirboys. They pioneered a unique sound and style, which had them singing in a harmonic quartet way. Bone thugs struggled for a number of years to gain recognition until they managed to get a break in front of Eazy e, who signed them to his record label ruthless records. One of their most popular tracks 1st of tha month, gave the artists a huge global audience, with their chilled out rap lyrics.

Busta Rhymes
Loud mouthed, exaggerated, and larger than life. Busta Rhymes is one classic and wild character in the hip hop game. Originally a front rapper for the group, leaders of the new school.
Your Opinion of Busta Ryhmes
Bushwick Bill
Bushwick Bill is known as one part of the hip hop group geto boys. Bushwick Bill wasn't your average rapper, in fact he was shorter than any other rapper as he was midget sized. But what he made up for in height, he more than delivered in lyrics, and performance. Originally from Jamacia, and brought up in New York he brought a smooth flow to all the Geto Boys hits.
Your Opinion of Bushwick Bill
Cypress Hill
The original smokers and insane in the membrain is one of cypress hills biggest hits, but thats also the best description of this super hip hop group.

Cappadonna
Cappadonna is good friends with the wu-tang, and is sort of like an unofficial member, yet he guest raps in nearly every wu tang & solo wu tang album. He is one of the groups original mentors, helping method man learn how to rap. Cappadonna has released a few solo albums, and they where all well received, and kept to the strict wu tang code of killer lyrics, and kung fu samples.
Your Opinion of Cappadonna
Dizzee Rascal
Dizzee Rascal is a UK hip hop act out of London. He has a number of catchy tunes, and although you could almost say that he is more geared towards the pop side of the UK music scene, he himself says that his main influences include lots of American hip hop and rap.
Your Opinion of Dizzee Rascal
Digital Underground
Digital Underground were on the most pioneering rap groups that although never received lots of commercial recognition, where hugely respected and influencing on so many rap artists it would be difficult to name them all. Digital Underground where a rolling music group, with many of their members coming and going, although the lead of the band Shock G, who was behind the Humpty Hump Alter ego, remained. At the time Digital Underground hit the hip hop scene, there was something very pioneering about them. They looked at electronics and computers as the future, and this become part of their act. They where actually hugely influenced by Parliament funkadelic and George Clinton, making them their most sampled influences. Tupac even toured with them and rapped on a number of tracks.

Eazy E
Eric "eazy e" Wright was known for putting Compton on the map. The original founder of NWA, and known as one of the realest gangsters in the rap industry. He founded ruthless records, using money built up from drug dealing, and gang banging. With his slightly high sounding rapping voice, he was hugely recognizable, and very popular. He was known to really live the life of a high roller, and his street smart lyrics reflected this. He released albums with NWA, and also went on to have a hugely successful solo artists career. Eazy E died from aids.
Your Opinion of Eazy-E
Ghostface Killah
One of the original members of the Wu tang. Ghost face has carved a very sucessful career in the hip hop industry, with lots of hits, and collaborations. Everyone enjoys most though when he partners up with his teammate Raekwon the chef.
Your Opinion of Ghostface
Grandmaster Flash
Back when ever hard core gangster was in their nappies or their fathers nut sack, Grandmaster Flash was making a new idea. That idea would within 30 years become the huge hip hop industry.
Your Opinion of Grandmaster Flash
GZA
The GZA/Genius is one of the 9 original members of the Wu tang. However the Genuis was involved in the hip hop scene with a solo career long before joining up with the Wu. Considered by most as the lyrical genuis of the wu tang.
Your Opinion of GZA
Gangstarr
Gangstarr is a massively respcted double team of both GURU, and Dj Premier. Guru found that the word gang starr, and the symbolic nature of the chain and the starr was more what they where about. There first album achieved good success with their style being defined as late 80's, with a wide variety of instrumental jazz styles from dj premier, and the instantly recognizable monotone voice of guru, they are a great group to listen to. Gurus lyrics are alway on point, and although guru has now died, there is plenty of him still rapping as tight as ever on gangstarr albums.

Ice-T
Ice-T. Many people hold the title of godfather of rap, however, there is only one godfather pimp of the rap game, and that is Ice-t. Quoted by every major rap artist as one of their main influences, Ice broke on the scene before NWA, with his tough gangster style and killer lyrics. Guns, money, hustling.and women the main subject matter, yet ice-t managed to carve out a huge amount of controversy with many white middle american parents up in arms at this bad influence on their angelic children. He was considered for a while a slight cross over, with his heavy metal band body count, but really it was ice pioneering a new hardcore style that many rappers today have jumped on like car bandwagon jackers. Ice-t has managed to maintain a real hardcore persona, with many film appearances that compliment his rap styles, and to prove he was the biggest pimp in the game, he married coco, the woman with the amazing booty. Bow down to the Ice.

Your Opinion of Ice T
Ice cube
Ice cube is one of the giants of the rap game. His rap CV includes leaving NWA to start his solo career at the height of NWA popularity. A move that would be criticized to totally backfire on him. Instead Ice Cube came out on top. AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted was ice cubes first solo album, and it was considered an instant classic. The thing that really propelled Ice cube to the main stream was his role as doughboy in the hit film Boyz in the Hood. He also had a couple of tracks on the soundtrack, including the main theme. From all the rappers in the game, it has to be Ice cube that has managed to carve the best career in Hollywood. Although a couple of goofs, most of the films have been popular, and Ice cube has managed to be respected, even among single parents. His career and almost his life took a slight dive when he stole the track hook for his comedy movie Friday. He stole it from cypress hill, who went ballistic, and even the nation of Islam had to step in to ask them to settle things. Finally they did, and the world was once again at peace.
Your Opinion of Ice Cube
Public Enemy
Public Enemy where the original rebels without a pause. With their tough talking political rhetoric, and they're highly crafted and explosive beats by the bomb squad, Public Enemy can easily be considered one of the most successful rap super-groups of all time. There was always 2 parts to public enemy. The highly serious chuck-d, who was the main lyrical mc, and the flamboyant flavour flav. Both artists so different, yet both an unbelievable stage & musical force. Along with a DJ called terminator X, and the SW1, a near militant group of dancers, they certainly choose the perfect name for a rap group.

Redman
Redman has to be described as one of the realist mc's in the hip hop game. With a huge range of albums tracks and collaborations with some of the worlds most popular artists outside the hip hip game, its almost like redman is hip hop personified. Redman still smokes blunts, still lives in the hood, and still keeps making some of the illist tracks for any fans of rap. He was originally associated, and worked extensively with Eric Sermen, from EPMD. Redman has been signed to defjam records, and enjoys film cameo's as well as his double team act with method man in the film how high.
Your Opinion of Redman
Brand Nubian
Brand Nubian were an original old school hip hop group from day 1. They had a positive, and upbeat collection of rhymes and beats, with special notoriety given to the Grand Puba, who went on to become a successful solo artist.

Shyne
Shyne was known as the prodigy of Puffy Combs on the badboy label, just as it was really hitting the mainstream. Shyne's hardcore lyrics, mostly inspired and influenced from sean combs himself, help paint the image, and influence, of a hardcore gangster style, along with shynes low bouncy notorious big style tone of his voice.
The image of shyne as a badboy served him badly when his involvement in a nightclub shooting resulted in him spending 10 years incarcerated, where he was then deported home to Belize. He has since put badboy, and combs well behind him, as he carves out another career in a different music genre and style.

I noticed there are no groups that represented a pro-black agenda on this list.
No PE,PRT,YZ,X-Clan, whoever put this list together is bias.
there was an old late 80's rap group or early 90's with song called strange and song called the juggaknots,..the song strange had the back ground music to cameo's song strange
Glad that you mixed the Christian Rap into your list. Not many people are cool enough to do that. Kudos.

why are the only options GANGSTER, PRANKSTER OR NEVER HEARD OF THEM? Why does it have to be such extremes?????
i view some of these as artist, neither gangsters or pranksters...why r u feeding into the stereotype of what rap is not about?
